Aerial Photograph

A reconnaissance survey is limited in nature, and is usually recommended for areas in which there is limited or an unknown expectation of significant resources.

This level of effort includes background research to identify known sites in the proposed project area.  Background research entails intensive examination of topographic and soils maps, aerial photographs (current and old), environmental characteristics, government documents and historic information on the property.

Typically SouthArc will make a site visit to verify the background information and determine whether any obvious cultural resources are present.  This visit may include limited subsurface testing known as judgmental testing because it is placed in areas the archaeologist considers reasonable to test.

Any structures or other cultural features which may be over 50 years in age are photographed and recorded.  A report is then prepared correlating the background information and field observations.  Recommendations are made as to whether additional research is needed.
