Large scale excavation in an urban environment. |

If a significant site (i.e. a site eligible for the National Register) has been identified, and adverse impacts on the site cannot be avoided, Phase III level research may be required. For archaeological sites, this normally consists of extensive excavations, often accompanied by specialized studies of faunal (animal) or botanical remains. Radiocarbon testing or other dating techniques are frequently utilized.
Phase III archaeological investigations for historic properties consists of extensive documentation of the properties. For structures this may include detailed drawings and photographs which meet the requirements of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) or the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). There are different levels of HABS/HAER documentation. Consultation with the SHPO will determine which level is required. In-depth historic research is also a part of the Phase III documentation.
